Polar BearJuly 2011, a journey of mammoth proportions - just the first leg, after a trans-Atlantic flight of 11 hours, was an epic 3200 km drive north (including the planned detours) to the end of roads in northern Manitoba. From there on, nothing but boreal forests, Arctic tundra and a slow trundling train, the only land link to my primary destination - the remote outpost of Churchill on Hudson Bay. A bleak landscape of awe and beauty, where the sea remains frozen into mid-summer, this was the realm of the Ice Bear. After success in Manitoba, leg two would take me far to west of North America, Grizzly country in Wyoming and thereafter Colarado.

And so to the goals of my trip - an ambitious attempt to see not only Polar Bear, the number one goal, but also the other two bear species in North America - Black Bear and Grizzly Bear.

June 2011. Butterfly Season in Swing.

Sooty Copper

A fairly quiet month, largely due to commitments keeping me from the great outside. Nevertheless, still some notable highlights - some excellent butterflies ranging from Poplar Admirals and Purple Emperors to Swallowtails and Black Hairstreaks, plus an excellent array of breeding birds, including good numbers of Corncrakes and a pair of Wrynecks in one of my nestboxs and a good bunch of mammals too - including Wild Boar on my land and both Elk and White-bellied Hedgehog near Ignalina.

May 2011. Snow to Sun.

Pied Flycatcher

A Greenish Warbler singing in the garden, Bitterns, Hobby, Wrynecks and swarms of Black Terns on local lakes, a good start to May. And so it continued, migrants arriving through the month, all the local breeders from Pied Flycathers through to Red-backed Shrikes and more. By the end of the month, after a quick trip to the snowy mountains of Georgia, it was turn of the butterflies to impress - exceptionally high numbers of Swallowtails, plus the first fritillaries of the year and both Grizzled and Northern Chequered Skippers.
