September 2009. Neotropics to Baltic Cold. PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jos

With half the month in superb Costa Rica and the remainder sulking back in Lithuania, the month's news can be summarized by a quick glance at the trip report for Costa Rica, then a perusal of the notes below for Lithuania.

1-14th September. Costa Rica

A super trip, full of birds and mammals. For full details CLICK HERE.

15-30th September. Lithuania.

Autumn in full swing, birds on the move - the first geese heading over, passerines overhead. The highlights of my few trips out were a Kestrel on my land (only the fifth record there), a trickle of Bramblings too, plus a selection of bits and bobs at Baltoji Voke - 12 Bean Geese, a flock of 11 White-tailed Eagles and concentrations of Cormorants and Great White Egrets, numbering over 270 and approximately 90 respectively.

Otherwise, the resident Crested Tit at the garden feeders was joined by a second bird and that was about it for bird news ...really didn't make the effort to get out and about!!! Still, however, butterflies were active right through to the end of the month - an odd Brimstone here and there, several Red Admirals and Small Tortoiseshells, a Comma, one or two Large Whites and, on the last day of the month, one Painted Lady.
