Birding Information - Baltic Region

Poland. Avestom, a very good website dedicated to birds and birding in northeast Poland - Biebrza, Bialowieza and other areas. Regular updates in English, frequent photographs.

Latvia. Latest news on rare bird sightings in Latvia, mostly in Latvian language (but with Latin names added).

Sweden. An excellent site, setting the standard for the Baltics. Detailed information on latest bird sightings, updated daily with maps and directions provided. All information available in English and Swedish.

International Forums/Websites

BirdForum. One of the very best websites out there, a forum for all levels and interests on just about everything relating to birds and birding worldwide. Also separate forums on mammals, butterflies, etc. All in all, excellent.

Birdtours, Birding Trip Reports. For birding reports worldwide, this is certainly the best internet resource available. Contains over 1400 trip reports, frequently updated.

Blogs, Some of the Good Ones

Not Quite Scilly Blogspot. Unique humour, Gavin Haig's birding blog on the Backwater of the Devon coast.

Stockholm Blog. Birding news, diary and excellent artwork, all courtesy of Alan Dalton, an Irish birder based in Stockholm.

Lithuania, Practical Information

Airline connections have improved very much over the last year. From western Europe, Star 1 Airlines operates into Vilnius and Air Baltic offers direct service, plus more connections via Ryga. From the UK, the best option is sometimes  Ryan Air into Kaunas (100 km west of Vilnius).  LOT (Polish) and Czech Airlines offer some of the best connections from elsewhere in Europe.

Kaunas-Vilnius Shuttle. A convenient way to travel from Kaunas Airport to Vilnius. Tickets can be booked online and cost 39 litas (about 11 euro) each way.

Weather. Latest five-day forecasts for Lithuania.

Photograph albums. Very good company that prints photograph albums from digital images. Online system to self-design the albums. Also do calendars, etc. Website in Lithuanian, but director speaks English and will answer all e-mails.
